Wooly Prolapsid 3 (9)

Gunslinger Knights

This hideous, unfinished-looking creature resembles a horse-sized weasel with multiple pairs of legs like a caterpillar, several unseeing eyes peering out of suppurating holes irregularly spaced around its head, and intestine-like growths extruding from its body.

Completely blind, it navigates by scent and communicates with others of its kind by high-pitched screeches that sound like an injured animal. It is as likely to eat corpses as hunt fresh meat, and often scavenges scraps left behind by the rest of a horde.

Motive: Hungers for flesh

Environment: In, near, and after Fundament Storms; alone or in packs of up to ten

Health: 9

Damage Inflicted: Minor wound (3 points)

Armor: 2 against cold

Movement: Short; short when climbing

Modifications: Speed defense as level 4

Combat: A wooly prolapsid grabs foes with its jaws, then coils around its prey to grasp with its pairs of legs (Might or Speed task to escape). It can hold only one creature at a time. While a wooly prolapsid is holding a creature, it can attack only the held creature. In each round that a held creature does not escape, it automatically takes 4 points of damage in addition to the prolapsid's attempt to bite and tear at flesh.

The intestine-like growths on a prolapsid's body are actually its unhatched young. The violence of combat tends to dislodge a few of these hairless, cat-sized smaller versions of the adult creature, which attempt to eat whatever the parent is eating. The bite attack of the hairless prolapsid is eased against a creature the parent is holding, but it doesn't grab its foe and doesn't automatically inflict damage each turn.

After combat, the young eat their fill of nearby corpses, then burrow back into the parent's body. If their parent is dead, they cannibalize it from the inside, then probably starve if they can't find carrion or prey of their size.

Prolapsids are immune to visual effects, such as illusions. However, scent-based effects can confuse and "blind" them temporarily.

Interaction: Wooly prolapsids are nearly mindless beasts and only think in terms of predator and prey. They are attracted to the smell of rotting meat and may stop to eat a dead offering instead of pursuing live prey; however, if they determine there's not enough meat for the entire pack, the hungriest ones attack any nearby non-horrors.

Use: After the trailing end of a horde passes, a wave of wooly prolapsids arrives to eat the leavings. A dead animal is infested with prolapsid young.

Hairless prolapsid: level 1, Speed defense as level 3 due to size; blind but relies on scent and hearing; moves an immediate distance each round

GM Intrusion: Five hairless prolapsids erupt from the parent creature and attack the character as a level 3 swarm. A successful hit means the young partially eat their way into the character, automatically inflicting 1 damage each round per young until killed or removed.
