Strangler Wasp 3 (9)

Tidal Blades

Strangler wasps are dangerous sea creatures, about twice the size of the jellies grown in farms.

The wasps surround their prey and paralyze them with a poisonous spike, then hold their victims underwater with their appendages until they drown. It's believed that strangler wasps kill to eat, but it's also possible that they kill just to kill (or at the command of their queen).

The strangler queen is much larger than strangler wasps and has the ability to release electricity. She is never far from her swarm. She communicates to her brood through pulses of electricity, which sometimes create large tsunamis and other storms in their wake.

Strangler queen: level 5; health 20; electrical pulse inflicts 5 points of electrical damage to all characters within long range

Motive: Food, defense

Environment: Reefs

Health: 12

Damage Inflicted: Minor wound (3 points)

Movement: Short

Combat: Targets injected with the strangler wasp's poisonous spike take 3 points of Speed damage (ignores Armor), and the target must make a Might defense roll to resist being paralyzed for a round.

A strangler wasp grabs its victim and pulls them underwater. Breaking free is a level 3 Might or Speed task. If the victim is paralyzed, someone else can attempt to break them free (doing so is a level 3 Might task).

Strangler wasps are immune to most venoms, toxins, and poisons.

Interaction: As far as anyone can tell, strangler wasps aren't able (or perhaps willing) to communicate with anyone other than each other and their queen.

Use: Because most people are familiar with the smaller, less dangerous jellies that are raised in jelly farms, it's easy for characters to underestimate these monsters. More than one explorer has met their end by deciding to take a "shortcut" and swim through a strangler wasp swarm.

GM Intrusion: The strangler queen releases a pulse of energy that activates, destroys, or impairs one of the character's cyphers or shell devices.
