Mercenary 4 (12)

Tidal Bladesv

Mercenaries are monster hunters who lend their skills for a price. The majority of them are crocs, but many frogs and nag'i also embrace this path. Mercenaries can be found offering protection to convoys in the desert, to those who practice illegal coral mining, to regular citizens who seek protection from the monsters near the Fold, and for many other purposes.

Motive: Profit, adventure

Environment: Mercenaries are rare in urban centers but easy to find once you approach the city outskirts. Many croc mercenaries set up their base in Remo's Dock, waiting to be hired for dangerous operations in and around the Fold.

Health: 18

Damage Inflicted: 4 or 6 points; see Combat

Armor: 2

Movement: Short

Modifications: Attacks, initiative, and defense against monsters as level 6

Combat: Most mercenaries have a heavy monster-fighting weapon (or weapons) that they love dearly. They often name their weapons and adorn them with unique elements, colors, and even upgrades. Cyphers and artifacts that deal damage or add to their attacks are also much beloved.

On their first attack against a particular foe, mercenaries can stun the foe instead of inflicting damage. In this case, stunned characters lose their turn for two rounds.

When fighting monsters larger than themselves, mercenaries inflict a moderate wound (6 points).

Interaction: Mercenaries may come across as gruff, gregarious, or even garrulous. They know their skills are sought after, but there's a lot of competition, so they do their best to show off their strengths. For some, this means a display of physical prowess, while for others it's talking up their previous exploits and accomplishments.

Use: The characters need to hire someone to protect them as they cross a dangerous span of the ocean or desert. The characters want to learn how to become mercenaries themselves and hope to train under someone. There's a job that a mercenary wants to take on, but it's too much for them alone, and they invite the PCs to join forces.

Loot: A medium or heavy weapon and possibly a shield, medium armor, and 1d6 shells.

GM Intrusion: The mercenary takes or breaks the character's weapon. The mercenary's grip slips and their weapon goes flying toward the character.
