Devils are a manifestation of pure evil. They are native creatures to various hell dimensions of torment and fire, and they come in many forms, with most being some iteration of a humanoid shape with large bat wings, a bestial face, and twisting horns. Most stink of brimstone and have a tail that ends in a fork. Devils fill the ranks of hellish armies, guard evil vaults, and appear at the magical summons of warlocks and sorcerers who are not afraid for the sanctity of their own souls.
Motive: Collect souls
Environment: Anywhere in various nether realms; sometimes called by mortal magic
Health: 12
Damage Inflicted: Moderate wound
Armor: 3
Movement: Short; short when flying
Modifications: Deception as level 7
Combat: A devil attacks with two claws, each inflicting a moderate wound. When possible, they attack with surprise (+2 difficulty), allowing them to fly up to a short distance and make their attacks.
Some devils carry a trident, which inflicts a moderate wound and the foe has to choose whether the trident impales them (inflicting a minor wound in addition to the moderate wound) or the devil moves them an immediate distance. An impaled foe automatically takes a moderate wound each round on the devil’s turn until they use an action to pull themselves free.
Some devils use magic, allowing them to attack with short-range bolts of fire, mesmerize or terrify a short-range foe until the foe is attacked or uses a non-rest recovery to break free, create simple illusions in an immediate area, or teleport itself a very long distance.
Interaction: Evil, cruel, and malevolent, devils are more than happy to talk, especially to those already caught and being readied for torture. Devils serve yet more powerful devils out of fear. If they find someone or something they fear more, they readily betray their master and become obsequious and cringing, though further betrayal is always on the table.
Use: A spate of violent murders grips a city in fear—a devil has escaped into the world of mortals without a leash. It spends nights hunting anyone it spots from its perches atop the city’s holy places.
GM Intrusion: The devil anticipates the character’s melee attack and uses its wing to deflect or divert it. The devil is unharmed by the attack, but the character must succeed at a Speed roll to avoid hitting an ally or breaking their weapon.
