Plays A Deadly Instrument

Music is a beast. Your instrument is the whip. And you're the beast tamer. The beast roars at your practiced command, shaking the hearts and stirring the minds of all who hear and see you perform. The sound is what's important, but so is the instrument you use to produce it. And yours is a one-of-a-kind customized special edition appliance for producing mind-blowing performances. There's no other instrument like it. One minute you might be jamming to stir the hearts of your allies to battle, and the next minute using that same instrument to tear out your enemy's throat.

Additional Equipment

One portable musical instrument of your choice that is modified or reinforced so that it could also be used as a mundane melee or ranged weapon. For example, the bow of your stringed instrument might also serve as a sword. Your reinforced iron flute as a baton or blow gun or your guitar might also fire pistol rounds. You also have tools for keeping your instrument in repair and in tune, which is a must, especially if you use your instrument in a fight.

Tier 1

Musical Performer Skill

You are trained in playing a musical instrument of your choice, such as a guitar, flute, or violin. You are also practiced in using that instrument-or some component of that instrument-as a light or medium weapon.

Musical Interlude Enabler

After a target has willingly listened to you play your music for at least one round while outside of combat, the difficulty of your first attack against that foe is decreased by one step.

Tier 2

Inspirational Performance (1 Intellect point) Action

Through your musical performance, you inspire your allies. While you play, your allies within short range modify the difficulty of one-and only one-of the following task types (your choice) by one step to their benefit: defense tasks, attack tasks, or tasks related to any skill that you are trained or specialized in. Alternatively, you can demoralize your foes, in which case while you play, your foes within short range modify the difficulty of one of the following task types (your choice) by one step to their detriment: defense tasks, attack tasks, or tasks related to any skill that you are trained or specialized in.

Tier 3

Musical Defense Enabler

While your musical instrument is in your hand or hands, you are trained in Speed defense tasks.

Virtuoso Enabler

You are specialized in playing your musical instrument. If you are already specialized, you instead add +1 to any die roll related to playing music with your instrument.

Tier 4

Instrument Upgrade

You further customize your instrument, granting it one additional unique attack mode from the following list.

Firebreathing (5 Intellect points) Enabler

When you wish it, your instrument produces a stream of blazing fire for up to ten minutes. You can use the fiery display to visually enhance your performance by drawing attention to yourself, or as an action to attack up to three creatures standing next to each other within short range (making a separate attack roll for each target). A successful attack inflicts a moderate wound (4 points).

Song of Shock and Awe (5+ Intellect points) Action

You blast a fan of lightning out from your instrument to short range in an arc that is approximately 50 feet (15 m) wide at the end. This discharge inflicts a moderate wound (4 points). If you apply Effort to increase the damage rather than to decrease the difficulty, you deal 2 additional points of damage per level of Effort (instead of 3 points), and targets in the area take 1 point of damage even if you fail the attack roll.

Automatic Instrument (5 Speed points) Action

Your instrument sprays projectiles everywhere, attacking every creature in an immediate area within short range. You must make attack rolls against each target. You inflict 4 points of damage on targets you hit.

Tier 5

Mind-blowing Performance Action

You can use this ability in one of two ways. Either your ongoing musical performance keeps the attention of all NPCs that hear you for as long as you play, or your performance inspires all NPCs (of your choosing) that hear it to function as if they were one level higher for the next hour.

Tier 6

Deadly Instrument Enabler

You deal 2 additional points of damage with your instrument when you use it as a weapon, including when you use an attack granted by Instrument Upgrade.

Dirge (5 Might points) Action

If you strike a foe of level 3 or lower with your musical instrument, you kill the target instantly.

GM Intrusions: Instruments break. Instruments can be stolen. Instruments can be dropped or forced out of a musician's hand.
